Thursday's game in Arnold, Missouri was to be the first of a weekend tournament. The De Soto Express had finished the summer season in first place with 12 wins and one loss. The game was canceled.
It was just two young boys playing catch, warming up their 13-year-old arms before the game at the Arnold Athletic Association complex. The two De Soto Express teammates had done this countless times before.
Tragically, one boy turned away for whatever reason. Perhaps he saw a friend in the stands, or another teammate.
The ball struck him in the back of his head, and he collasped.
Friday, at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, he was pronounced dead.
